On June 21st, Pittsburgh celebrated World Refugee Day at Market Square in downtown Pittsburgh. The free annual event featured cultural performances from around the globe, ethnic food vendors, a global marketplace, children’s activities, and speeches by refugee and immigrant community members, Mayor William Peduto, Allegheny County Executive Righ Fitzgerald, as well as dignitaries from the US Department of State, The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and HIAS (a Jewish American nonprofit agency that resettles refugees in the US). The weather was beautiful and the message was clear- Pittsburgh welcomes refugees and immigrants!!!
