“No one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark.”
― Somalian Poet Warsan Shire

Hello!

For those who do not know me, I’m Charlotte Fry, Pennsylvania’s State Refugee Coordinator. On this World Refugee Day 2021 I would like to take a moment to recognize the tumultuous year we are finally putting behind us, and would like to thank all those who have steadfastly worked to ensure that services and support never faltered during these times.  Your work makes our slice of the world a kinder place, and one in which others have opportunities to build their lives anew.

To the refugee and immigrant community I proudly say, “welcome home!”  You may be insecure about things you see on the news. You may have asked yourselves if you belong among us. Let me answer this with a resounding, yes! You certainly belong, and have brought with you such a wealth of knowledge and experience that makes Pittsburgh and the United States an even more wonderful place to live.

I challenge you to give your community all you have to offer. Share your culture, your work ethic, your food, your ideas, and dreams with your new neighbors. Make your mark, speak your voice through your native languages, become engaged, create policy, serve others. For this is your home, a place of opportunity, a place of security, a place to learn and grow, a place to raise your family.  A home of peace, prosperity, of love, of compassion. Never let anyone tell you otherwise. Never let others hold you back from achieving the dreams you have had throughout your journey, especially now that you are here.
