This traditional homemade Russian anchovy paste is a potent and salty addition to your stews, soups, meats, salads and more.

  • 1 herring
  • 1⁄2 apple, peeled and cubed
  • 1⁄2 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons matzo flour or 2 slices bread, soaked in water

 Anchovy paste has been used for centuries throughout Europe and parts of Asia to flavor dishes!

Step 1
Clean herring. Soak in water for a few hours. Debone and cut into pieces. Grind in a food processor.
Step 2
Grind apple in food processor.
    Step 3
    Place herring and apple in a bowl.
      Step 4
      Add lemon juice, sugar, olive oil, and butter. Mix.
      Step 5
      Add matzo flour or bread. Mix.
